Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, (MTBI), or, Post
Concussive Syndrome
MTBI, often simply referred to as concussion, or Post concussive
syndrome has become a focus of attention in recent years with ever
increasing understanding of brain function. MTBI, or concussion is a
traumatically induced alteration in mental status. This may or may
not be associated with loss of consciousness. Manifestations of MTBI or
concussion present as traumatically induced physiologic disruption in
brain function. Manifestations may or may not include loss of
consciousness, memory loss, (amnesia), alteration of mental state or
personality, or focal neurologic deficits. Concussions may cause
temporary impairment of neurologic function, lasting impairment, coma
and death.
Automobile accidents, and contact sports are among the most common
causes of concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI).
Treatment of patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury,
(MTBI) or
concussion can vary widely. Whereas many conditions resolve
spontaneously with time, others require extensive intervention ranging
from rehabilitation to complicated neurosurgical procedures.
