Imbalance Q & A

What is imbalance?

Balance requires several systems to work in harmony: vision, your brain, and nervous system, the inner ear’s vestibular system, and the musculoskeletal system.

When one or more of the systems that enable you to balance don’t work properly, you can experience poor balance (disequilibrium), dizziness, vertigo (feeling that the room is spinning around you), disorientation, and syncope (fainting).

These imbalance symptoms significantly increase your risk of falls, which, in turn, cause extensive disability, pain, and death, particularly in older people.

Why might I have an imbalance?

Imbalance can be caused by numerous problems, ranging from inner ear infections and excessive alcohol consumption to central nervous system disorders. Conditions that commonly cause imbalance include:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Hydrocephalus (fluid build-up in the skull)
  • Brain tumors like acoustic neuromas
  • Stroke
  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA)
  • Ataxia (loss of muscle control)
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Vestibular neuritis
  • Traumatic brain injury or concussion

Poor balance can also result from cardiovascular disorders. They prevent your brain from receiving enough oxygen and cause your blood pressure to drop suddenly. Syncope also occurs for these reasons. Older people often develop imbalances because the body’s systems gradually decline with age.

Many patients visit Dr. Scopelliti after failing to get an accurate diagnosis or undergoing treatments elsewhere that haven’t worked.

Using advanced diagnostics, such as comprehensive assessment of postural systems (CAPS®) dynamic posturography, pulse oximetry, and video nystagmography (VNG), Dr. Scopelliti determines the exact cause of your imbalance so you receive the most effective treatment.

 What treatment helps with imbalance?

Treatment for imbalance depends on its cause. If you have an incurable condition like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease, you might benefit from balance-training exercises. Physical therapy and regular exercise can also help build your strength and fitness.

Dr. Scopelliti uses functional neurologic rehabilitation methods to treat patients with imbalance, dizziness, and vertigo. Patients with BPPV usually find canalith repositioning an effective treatment. The technique involves Dr. Scopelliti moving your head slowly in specific ways to dislodge the particles inside your ear that are causing balance problems. These treatments must be done in an exacting way, however, to be effective.
